Kalki Krishnamurthy was a prolific writer and journalist from Tamil Nadu, India. He is best known for his historical fiction novel, Ponniyin Selvan, which is considered one of the greatest works of Tamil literature. Kalki was born in 1899 in a small village in Tamil Nadu and began his career as a journalist at the age of 17. He went on to become a prolific writer, penning over 120 short stories, 10 novels, and several essays.

However, it was his magnum opus, Ponniyin Selvan, that established him as one of the greatest writers in Tamil literature. The novel was first serialized in the Tamil magazine Kalki from 1950 to 1954. The weekly publication of the novel was eagerly awaited by readers, who would queue up outside the magazine office to get their hands on the latest installment. Such was the popularity of the novel that it was even rumored that the Tamil Nadu government had to declare a holiday on the day of the release of the final installment of the novel, as people wanted to read it without any interruption.

Ponniyin Selvan is set in the 10th century and tells the story of Arulmozhivarman, the prince of the Chola dynasty, and his adventures. The novel is known for its intricate plot, richly drawn characters, and vivid description of the political and cultural landscape of the time. It has been translated into several languages and is widely read even today, almost 70 years after its initial publication.
