Do you need a business plan when you start out in business? In my opinion yes, yes you do.
Running a business is like trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle, which has thousands and thousands of pieces and no picture on the front of the box to help you to determine, how the puzzle is supposed to be put together or what it's supposed to be. Look what it's supposed to look like. And for me, that's a really great analogy of what it means to be a business owner, especially if you've never been in business before because you've got nothing to compare it to.
I believe that it's so fundamental for all new business owners to create a business plan for themselves because your business plan then becomes that picture of the jigsaw puzzle on the front of the box, which gives you that direction, which gives you that guidance so that you know, what your business should look like and you know how to put those pieces together.
There are two different types of plans. There's the business plan that you have when you start out your business, that's going to be more comprehensive. And I'm going to talk to you about that during this podcast and share with you the five things to include in that business plan. And then there's the business plan that you have when you are running your business and you are navigating your business on a daily basis. And that business plan is going to be shorter and it's going to be more focused on the specific goals that you want to achieve.
For this episode let's just focus on the business plan for startups. So if you've just started your business, this is the type of plan that I'm recommending that you have, and I'm covering five of the key things to include in your plan. And although there are many more things to include in your plan, I'm including what I believe are the top five most important things to include within your Business plan.
