When Chris Luna decided to join the Navy, he was following in his father's footsteps. His grandfather had served in the Army; his brother, the Marines. Enlisting was in his DNA, he said.Raised in a small town in Oklahoma, Luna, 47, would end up traveling the world during his time of service, from 1996 to 2018.After retiring from the Armed Forces, Luna eventually made his way to Houston after a friend bought a home in the Champions Forest area. Before he moved, Luna had been in therapy, while living in Washington, D.C. He had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and hypervigilance, constantly on guard and prepared from his years in service and his time in combat. At K9s for Warriors, dogs are trained specifically to react to the symptoms a veteran with invisible wounds might experience.Luna's first interview was about 90 days out. His last interview was the day before he went to meet his dog.“They said, ‘What are you looking for?’” he recalled. “I told them, ‘I just want someone to love me.’ And I’ll tell you, that’s exactly what I got.”
