The San Francisco 49ers suspended radio analyst Tim Ryan for one game after he said on-air that Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson has an advantage in faking handoffs because of his "dark skin color with a dark football."
“He’s really good at that fake, Lamar Jackson, but when you consider his dark skin color with a dark football with a dark uniform, you could not see that thing,” Ryan said on San Francisco radio station KNBR’s “Murph & Mac Show" on Monday.
Were Tim Ryans comments disrespectful?
Before I answer that question let me provide you some content
According to human resource documents: Harassment based on a hostile work environment—the kinds of jokes and comments you're facing—is a form of illegal discrimination. People are most familiar with sexual harassment cases, but harassment can be based on other protected characteristics too, including race.
To cross the harassment line, workplace conduct must be unwelcome, and it must be sufficiently severe or pervasive to change the terms and conditions of the victim's employment. The "unwelcome" requirement means simply that the conduct offended you, and you didn't solicit or actively participate in it.
So what makes the NFL any different than a blue collar employment.
Racial Harassment is defined as Under federal law it is illegal to harass a person in any aspect of employment because of that person’s race or color. Harassment can include racial slurs, offensive or derogatory remarks about a person’s race or color, or the display of racially-offensive symbols.
Last year I don’t remember anything said about Reigning MVP, Patrick mahomes game play.
Lamar Jackson isn’t the first African America or Black QB to be a formative and very mobile.
Funny thing is Many sports analyst are stating that the comments made were made in a manner that was unprofessional but not offensive. Not offensive to who is the question.
I even heard that if he would have said it over the air then yeah we would be having a different conversation. Ok. What makes over the TV airways any different than Radio? Outside of the reach and many more people may have been affected. Hmmmm
I guess Richard Sherman is very outspoken so people gauged his response.
Play Richard Shermans response.
I am not saying that Tim Ryan is racist, what I am saying that he may have been a little to comfortable in his description.
There’s work conversation and then there’s hanging out with your friends conversation. Do I think white guys make jokes at the expense of other races. Yep I sure do, As well as Black, Hispanic or Asian do the same. Some things are socially exceptable.
So how do we designate Black QB’s who have a great pocket presence. Here’s the thing the color preconceptions is always present. Regardless of who or the position, and when I say color this also mean all races represented in the NFL. However there are some generalies that are forever present as well, but I guess we don’t make a big deal out of it right….. Truth is truth how ever it comes out.
