As a publisher at Hachette Australia, Bernadette Foley spent ten years commissioning fiction and nonfiction book titles. She worked with authors such as Di Morrissey, William McInnes, Kate Ceberano and Richard Flanagan. She also spent five years as an editor and publisher at Pan McMillan.

In 2016, Bernadette founded Broadcast Books in Sydney. She works with authors to publish independently or prepare their manuscripts for traditional publishing houses. She runs workshops too.

Bernadette is also a lecturer at the Australian Writers Centre, where she teaches the How to Write a Novel course.

Bernadette answers all our burning questions, including:

- How to get your manuscript from the slush pile to the yes pile

- How to decide whether to self publish or pitch to publishers

- Whether the stigma of self-publishing will fade away
completely

- Why she loves working with independent authors
