“When fate to England shall restore

A king to reign as heretofore,

Great death in London shall be though

And many houses be laid low.”

This prophecy was written sometime in the 15th century and supposedly predicts the great fire of London which quite literally razed nearly the entire city to the ground in 1666, during a time when, King Charles II was in command. Today, we’re going to dive into the intriguing world of Ursula Southeil, aka Mother Shipton – the rockstar English soothsayer and prophetess of 15th century England and supposed author of the eerie prediction you just heard (amongst several others). From her unique birth in Yorkshire England about 1488 all the way to her death in 1561, her supposed life and prophecies became the stuff of cultural legend. Accounts published nearly a century after her death identify her birthplace as Mother Shipton's Cave in Knaresborough– that’s right, she was born in a cave in the English countryside. In fact, it’s now a tourist attraction that you can still visit today, if you dare. Rumors say that the waters there can turn things to stone! Stories describe her as a clairvoyant and healer, attracting people from afar who sought her advice. Despite threats and warnings of witch trials, Mother Shipton continued her prophetic work and went on to be portrayed as Yorkshire's version of Nostradamus. So, grab your crystal ball, settle in, and let's unravel the mystique of Mother Shipton together on today’s episode of Idiopathic.
