Description

Over several years, Captain Worsley, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and the intrepid crew of the 1914 Trans-Antarctic Expedition faced hundreds of miles of stormy seas, ice packs, and snow-covered mountains. Though they knew from the start that this venture had a high likelihood of claiming their lives, they were unaware of just what might be in store for them when disaster struck as their ship, the Endurance became trapped in the clutches of pack ice.
For some 10 months, they camped on the ice and attempted to free the ship to no avail. Upon its eventual sinking into the icy depths, the team sailed lifeboats and what little they had left of them to Elephant Island where the majority of the men stayed behind while a small group of leaders (including Shackleton and Worsley) ventured on to what would hopefully be a safer harbor.
They landed on South Georgia Island finally, but still faced a harrowing 36 hour trek through more snow, biting winds, and treacherous frozen mountains before they could reach a whaling station where they might signal for help.
At some point during their grasp for safe harbor, the men experienced the sensation of someone walking alongside them, someone who previously was not part of their crew. This mysterious “third man” who seemingly appeared out of nowhere followed along through the worst parts of their trek. So who was this strange spectre that escorted them to the whaling station where they were finally able to signal for a rescue? Maybe we’ll find out for ourselves on today’s episode of Idiopathic!
