Tom reconnected with his Dad (my Uncle) as a teen after ten years of no contact and then maintained the relationship for the next 13 yrs before he passed.
He quit uni twice before working on boats as a deckhand, firstly prawn trawlers, then pearl farming for 6 yrs. He lived out of a backpack for ten years, just working and travelling. During that time, Tom was a fully functioning alcoholic who experimented with many other drugs. Mainly ‘party’ drugs but also psychedelics.
Tom stopped drinking at 30 due to their dad's death. His Dad (my Uncle) died from organ failure after living a very colourful life that heavily relied on alcohol, unlike his mother and father.
Tom has been sober for over 2 yrs, during which he completed a diploma in mental health.
He lives with an older indigenous lady from the Wiradjuri nation whom he met through studying. He is genuinely interested in helping people heal and hearing their unique life stories. Tom feels that he has recovered, overcome his addictions, and no longer represses his emotions. Sobriety was the thing that put him in the right state of being. It has had a positive ripple effect on everyone around him and has been worth every minute.
In this week's episode, Tom talks about his journey from losing contact with his Dad (my Uncle) at an early age and the reconnection that took place during his teen years. He discussed the escapism that resulted in him reverting to drinking and drugs and effectively removing himself from society.
This all changed two years ago post the death of his Dad and the profound experience that this death had on him. Post that, he is now sober, leads a healthy, clean lifestyle and is an advocate for Mental Health.
