Description

In this episode, we discuss the crucial process of choosing music for concert band and the downstream effect of those choices.  Dr. Barry Kraus and Dr. Ollie Liddell lend their expertise as we discuss success and the definition thereof.  (Is making a superior rating necessarily an indicator of success?)  We also discuss some interesting research that Dr. Kraus has conducted and how we might use that information to help inform directors as they choose music.  We discuss the lengthy process that leads to suitable music choices and other possible director considerations.  We discuss when to begin choosing music and the supply chain in the post-pandemic world.  We also discuss ways to prepare students’ musical palates before beginning an advanced work.  We spend significant time discussing the TBA Approved List and how we can help young directors.  All three of us agree that this topic is perhaps the most important for directors to consider.  Tune in next week for Part II.
