Before he was the Free State's Minister of Defense and the IRA's chief of staff, Richard Mulcahy was a postal worker who volunteered with the Irish Volunteers to fight for a free Ireland. He may have missed the action in Dublin, but, along with Thomas Ashe, led the only successful against the British forces during Easter Rising.
