At 18 months old, Shailynn Taylor was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA), a disease that deteriorates physical strength by affecting the motor nerve cells in the spinal cord. Her parents were told by doctors she wouldn’t live past 12. At 10 years old, Shailynn lost the ability to stand and has been living life in a power wheelchair ever since. Defying the odds and expiry date she was given, Shailynn is thriving and feeling the best she’s ever felt at the age of 28, passionately pursuing making a difference in others with her advocacy for disabilities. In this episode, Shailynn shares what it's like to live a unique experience on this planet from a wheelchair and more importantly, how those of us who are able-bodied, can shift our lens, our words and our actions to be more inclusive of those living with disabilities.
