On Wednesday, Walmart announced that its location on Silver Spring Drive on Milwaukee's northwest side will close its doors by March 10.

"I was like, OK, another store closing in our neighborhood," said Diana Vance.

The Walmart is located in a food desert, an area of the city without many supermarkets.

"I don't drive so this is a lot more convenient," said Bart Luttrell.

Luttrell said he walks to the Walmart on Silver Spring Drive for his groceries.

"I can walk here. I'll have to get a ride to the next one," Luttrell said.

City of Milwaukee data from 2019 says the city has 13 food deserts. According to the USDA, a food desert can be defined as an area where at least 100 households without vehicle access are more than a half mile away from the nearest supermarket.

The USDA's mapping of Milwaukee's food deserts shows the closing Walmart is located in the middle of a food desert.

"It's upsetting me a whole lot because me going way out and I can just come straight here because it's closer to my house. I'm close to this Walmart," said Meranda Gladney.

A Pick n' Save about 3.5 miles away is the closest grocery store that offers a similar selection to Walmart. Shoppers there may pay more than what they would at Walmart.
