In Downtown Elkhart, temperatures are expected to stay above freezing and get into the high 30s over the weekend. According the National Weather Service, snow is expected with new accumulation of less than a half-inch.

The warmer-than-average temperatures have not put a strain on business at NIBCO. With many out on winter break, the outdoor ice rink has been a popular recreational activity, organizers said.

Weather permitting, the ice rink will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. and again from 6 to 10 p.m. on Saturday and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Next week the rink will go back to being open Friday through Sunday only. Admission is $3 for children and $5 for adults. Skate rental is $3.

Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area has announced that it will open for the season Saturday, Jan. 6, thanks to a hard push this week with snowmaking.

The resort said to expect limited terrain this weekend, though it plans to keep adding to it as more snow can be made.

“To guarantee an opening, we focused very heavily on a few specific areas,” it explained in its announcement.

Specifically, it will open the “Easy Over” beginner slope that’s served with rope tows, while it’s also working now to add a variety of features. The resort will also open the slope dubbed “Swiss Miss,” which is served by its Quad 83 chairlift. That’s one of the first intermediate slopes that slide down from the rentals building.
