Berrien County first responders host Special Olympics fundraiser

The Berrien County Sheriff's Office and the New Buffalo Township Fire Department joined forces and hosted a delicious fundraiser.

The community was able to enjoy a stack of pancakes and support a great cause.

This was the second annual pancake breakfast hosted by the fire department, but the first year the sheriff's office joined in.

All of the proceeds of the event will go toward the Special Olympics of Michigan.

New Buffalo Township Fire Assistant Chief Michael Plis said, "Just joining the community, bringing everybody together. Trying to give the Special Olympics a little extra help with putting those kids in the Special Olympics and supporting them financially."

Last year, they were able to serve around 700 people and raised just over $2,000.

The Maple City Ice Bowl, a disc golf tournament based out of Goshen, raised more than $26,000 for The Window Inc., a food pantry that provides meals and clothing for families looking for support.

The need for The Window's services has nearly doubled since the pandemic and the pantry now serves an average of more than 900 families per month.

Each disc golfer in Saturday morning's tournament donated a minimum of $50 to The Window Inc. to participate.

The total for the entire event is expected to continue to rise as the Ice Bowl nears their goal of raising $30,000.
