Psalm 16:1

Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge.

What do you take refuge in?

If you’ve already read or heard the reflection on Psalm 62, earlier
in this series, the idea of refuge will be familiar. But we need to keep coming back to it because - this side of heaven - we will always be weak, needy, suffering people, in need of safety, shelter and protection. Where will we find the refuge that we need?

If we're honest with ourselves, God isn't necessarily the first place we run to when things are hard.

What do you take refuge in?

What do you rely on to make you feel better? Alcohol?
Chocolate? A cup of tea? Medication?

Who do you rely on to make everything alright? Your husband?
Your best friend? Your mum? Yourself?

What gives you a feeling of security? Your past achievements? Money in the bank? Your children being there for you when you get old?

Every single one of those things, used rightly, is a blessing from God for which we can be thankful. But none of them will ultimately keep us safe. Only God can do that. He is the only one we can rely on to stay standing, when everything else falls apart.

Let's praise him today that he is our ultimate safe place.
And let's remember to turn first of all to him when we feel weak and needy.
