Psalm 16:11
You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Psalm 16 ends with a focus on the life that awaits us with
God in heaven. Whilst there is joy in knowing God now, David's attention here is on our future joy, when we are eternally in his presence. As we saw yesterday, this Psalm is ultimately fulfilled in Jesus, who will sit at his father's right hand ruling forever in glory. But because we are united with him in his death and resurrection, we know that we will be there too.
Perhaps right now you're missing some of the earthly pleasures you've enjoyed in the past ... Visiting friends? Meals out? Walking
on the beach or in the countryside? Reflect for a moment on the idea of eternal pleasures. It's hard to imagine, but we are heading for a world of real, physical, tangible enjoyment so deep and rich that our best moments in this life don't even come close. And
those joys are eternal. They will never be taken away from us. No crisis will ever invade heaven to separate us from one another or undermine our joy. And our greatest joy will be being with God himself.
That is the 'path of life' God has opened up for us ... To live now knowing God, trusting him, walking with him daily, each day bringing us one step closer to our joyful eternal destiny. Let's praise God for that certain hope, and ask him to keep us walking this path of life with our eyes fixed on him today.
