Psalm 16:4
Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods or take up their names on my lips.
This Psalm is asking us some hard questions, isn't it?!
Where is my refuge? How much do I delight in God and his people? And today's verse is similarly uncomfortable. 'I will not make offerings to other Gods' says David. I'm sure we'd all say the same. No worship of Allah, or Buddha, or Shiva here!
But what about the 'small g' gods in our lives? What are the
things we love and serve and pour out our blood, sweat and tears for, as if they could save us. Maybe it’s career. Money. Security. My children's education or success. My marriage. My perfectly curated, well-run house. Other people's opinion of me. Personal ambitions. The possibilities are endless. Any good things can become a god to us, when it becomes the thing that we serve or the place where we look for hope, help or security.
Yet none of these fake gods are worthy of our praise or
devotion. Many of them are crumbling around us in the face of this virus. Only the one true God - our God - has ever been a real helper, comforter and rescuer. Only he deserves our worship & praise today. Let's praise him. And let's ask for his help not to give the worship that only he deserves to anything else.
