Psalm 16:5-6
Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.
These two verses are a picture of contentment. Was David
just having an especially good day when he wrote these words? After all, we know from some of the other psalms we've looked at together that his circumstances were not always 'secure' or 'pleasant'. He was often in danger, under attack from God's enemies. Yet, when he looks at the big picture of his life, what he sees most clearly is that, in having God as his personal Lord, he
has the very best of everything he could want. His situation in life now - whatever the difficulties - and his future inheritance are everything he desires, because he has God.
Can we say the same? We may feel very unhappy in our current
circumstances - for some of us, this season may be the hardest thing we've ever experienced in life. We can be honest with God about that. He doesn't expect us to pretend to be delighted when we feel like everything is falling apart. But alongside the struggles, do we share David's deep conviction that God himself
is enough for us? That in him, we have an inheritance to come that outshines anything we are experiencing right now? Do we know, as David knew, that a personal relationship with the God who made the universe gives us security and blessing that are found nowhere else? If we have even a little glimpse of that,
let's praise him for it today. And if we can't yet say v5-6 and mean them, let's be honest about that, and ask the one who changes hearts to give us a greater joy and contentment in him.
