Psalm 1:6
For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but
the way of the wicked leads to destruction.
As we considered yesterday, whether we are treated as ‘righteous’ or ‘wicked’ depends not on our own record, but on the righteousness of Jesus. All those who are united to him by faith are counted as ‘righteous’ because he is ‘righteous’. So we enjoy the privileges of the righteous. Not just the ability to stand before God on Judgement Day and enter into heaven, but also – as we see here – a whole new way of life now.
Notice how wonderfully asymmetric this verse is. We might expect that if ‘the way of the wicked leads to destruction’ then the other half of the sentence would say something like ’the way of the righteous leads to life’. And that’s certainly true. But what it actually says is way better!
Not only do we have life instead of destruction, but that life is lived – now and forever – under the watchful eye of God. He hasn’t just rescued us and left us to get on with things on our own. He cares for us, actively overseeing our every moment. We
get to live, today and every day, under the watchful care and protection of God. Whatever happens, however tough our present circumstances are, however uncertain our future feels, God sees and knows and cares and acts for our good. That’s been a huge encouragement to me. I pray that it is an encouragement to you as well.
So today, let’s thank God that he watches over us through all things.
