Psalm 27:2
When the wicked advance against me to devour me, it is my enemies and my foes who will stumble and fall.
Do you ever look around at the world and wonder why, so
often, the bad guys win? Evil triumphs. The rich exploit the poor and no-one stops them. Christians die at the hands of their persecutors and there is no justice. We know it shouldn't be like that. The wicked should suffer. The oppressor should lose their power.
David is confident that this WILL happen - his enemies will
be defeated. They are God's enemies, and therefore they are destined to lose. Maybe now. Maybe not until later. But there will be a day when God’s enemies will be fully and finally overthrown. In the darkest moment of human history - as the son of God hung dying on a cross - it looked like evil had won. Yet that was the moment when the devil and all his forces were defeated. It was their very attack against God's king, trying to 'devour' and destroy him, that brought about their downfall.
The things that attack us today - death, suffering, sickness, sin - are all outworkings of that same wicked opposition to God. So
even if they look and feel like they're winning right now, that isn't
true. Whatever advances against us today will ultimately 'stumble and fall'. One day, it will be dead and gone, powerless to attack us or frighten us any more. But we will still be standing, secure in the Lord who is our stronghold. Let's thank him for that great
assurance and ask for his help to really believe that this verse is as true for us today as it was for David when he wrote it.
