Psalm 33:6
By the word of the Lord the heavens were made, their starry host by the breath of his mouth.
One day last summer, we had a picnic outside, which was
briefly interrupted by a stranger's over-enthusiastic Labrador. It took the owner several attempts to get the dog to return to them. Our sausage rolls were apparently more compelling than the owner's voice. Any of us who've tried to control a hungry dog, or a small child, will know that our words are - at best - only sometimes effective.
But God's word is always effective. We saw in v.4 that what
he says is true. In fact, what God says MAKES something true. All was utterly dark until God said 'Let there be light' and suddenly 'it is light' was true, and 'it is dark' wasn't. God simply spoke, and whole galaxies of stars appeared. God's words have power and authority unlike anything else.
Even more amazingly, this word is personal. John 1 tells us
that 'In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God.' Jesus himself is 'the word' of God. He is the one by whom and for whom everything was made, even the stars. If you're wondering 'How exactly is it that God's word, which he speaks, can also be a person?' .... Well, me too! But our wondering needn't be the kind that makes us give up thinking, because it's too confusing! Instead, let it be the kind of wonder that fills us with awe, and leads us to worship Jesus - the one
who made all things and who is so great that he simply breathes out a cosmos whose edges we are nowhere near discovering. Let's praise and worship him, today.
