Meet Dr. Sarai S. Crain:

Dr. Sarai S. Crain was appointed Deputy Director of Sexual Assault Evidence for the California State Office of the Attorney General in the fall of 2022. There she is tasked with addressing the backlog of sexual assault kits in the state. In this role, she collaborates across disciplines to prioritize the experiences of victims impacted by interpersonal and intimate violence.

Prior to her current appointment, Sarai served as Deputy Chief of Violence Prevention for the City of Oakland where she oversaw the strategic implementation of public health approaches to gender-based violence intervention and prevention. Additionally, she served as the first Black Executive Director of Bay Area Women Against Rape (BAWAR), the nation’s oldest rape crisis center. Sarai has worked with various nonprofit and community-based organizations including Girls, Inc., Big Brothers Big Sisters, and YMCA.

Sarai is an adjunct professor at Claremont School of Theology where she lectures Master’s and Doctoral-level students on the intersection of gender-based violence in theological texts and faith-based organizations.

Dr. Crain is an ordained minister, social justice advocate, author, and educator. Her dissertation, entitled

Toward a Healing Church: Psycho-Spiritual Healing for Female Survivors of Sexual Violence in the Church of God addressed the crisis of sexual and intimate violence in the Biblical text and in North America.
