Finding Hope After Heartbreak: How Laura Mangum Broom Found Resilience After Divorce and Heart Transplant
After experiencing a double whammy of divorce and heart transplant, Laura Mangum Broom was at her lowest point. But through grief, counseling, and a determination to live her life to the fullest with her new heart, she discovered the power of resilience and hope.
In a candid conversation with host Walt Thiessen, Laura shared her emotional journey. “I crashed and burned three years ago right at the beginning of COVID,” she said. After a successful heart transplant, Laura received devastating news – her marriage was ending too. Facing quarantine alone after major surgery, Laura hit “rock bottom.”
But through difficult self-reflection, Laura realized she still had control over her thoughts and actions. She focused on practicing gratitude each day rather than dwelling on pain. “I had a brand new heart. I was 58 years old and I had the rest of my life to live,” Laura said.
Walt was impressed by Laura’s ability to redirect her mindset amid such trauma. But Laura credited humor for getting her through. “Laughter is kind of like a painkiller,” she noted.
By writing about her experience in “Flourishing After Adversity,” Laura hopes others can avoid learning resilience the hard way. She shares a growth mindset framework to overcome challenges through superpowers like problem-solving.
Laura now helps others uncover their own strengths. “When you start seeing the good things, life just gets so much better,” she said. Facing fear and taking risks outside her comfort zone led Laura to new purpose in life – giving others hope.
