Steve Hable Is a former prison therapist who now runs his own practice helping all sorts of different people with their mental health. We had a great conversation on how to have compassion and empathy for people who commit such horrible crimes. We talked about the effects of working in the prison environment and how it made him decide where to sit in a restaurant. Lastly, we talked about his strategy for treating and recovering from trauma.
Steve first reached out to talk to me about his experience being a mental health professional who has panic attacks. While in the ER, he overheard a nurse say " This guy is a mental health professional? I would never see him, he's crazy." After mustering up the courage he confronted the nurse with "Maybe these panic attacks are what makes me a good therapist. I can actually relate to what my patients are going through."
Enjoy!
