Born in Port Colborne, Ontario, Derek Amell's journey to becoming one of the NHL's most respected officials is remarkable. Starting his officiating career at the age of 21 while studying Chemical Engineering Technology at Durham College, Amell quickly moved up the ranks thanks to his size and calm demeanor on the ice. He worked in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) before earning a minor league contract with the NHL in 1997.
