Is the swim portion of a triathlon stopping you from trying the exhilarating sport? Today I’m going to start a 2 episode series to give you some tips on how to start swimming, how to improve, and how to train and race in the swim. After you listen, surely you’ll be ready to give swimming a try and go after that goal to finish a triathlon.
Today we are going to discuss: How to start and improve swimming.
First, we start with HEART (Healing, Empowerment, Awareness, Reflection, Transformation) and today we will focus on empowerment.
Personal empowerment means taking responsibility for your life so you can enjoy more happiness and success. Trust yourself and make positive choices that bring you closer to achieving your goals. Here are 5 principles of self-empowerment.
1 - Set realistic goals.
2 - Strengthen your skills.
3 - Manage your emotions.
4 - Belief in yourself.
5 - Gather support.
Last week I debunked 4 myths you might be telling yourself that is stopping you from participating in a triathlon. To recap - you don’t have to be super fit, you’re never too old, and you don’t have to train an insane amount of hours to be able to finish one. The 4th myth was “I’m not a good enough swimmer.”
In this episode:
Getting over the fear of open water swimming or just swimming
How to start swimming
How to improve
Just start swimming
Gear recommendations
Getting comfortable in the water
Breathing technique
Head and body position
Alignment and symmetry
Consistency
Workouts to improve
Just remember that you don’t have to be an expert swimmer to do a triathlon. You simply need to be able to move your body forward in the water for the course distance.

I have used and recommended SwimOutlet for many years. Everything listed in my team store is gear that I have used (except for the men’s swim shorts -I’m not a man- but my recommendation is based on trusted male friends who do use these items).
