Abraham on the move
Journeyed - moved from where he was
Toward the Negev (South?)
Sojourned in Gerar (Sojourned)
Not again
Apparently in another king’s land (thus sojourning)
Abraham calls Sarah his sister
Abimelech takes Sarah
Read Genesis 20 3-7 - 22:43
God came to Abimelech (what does abimelech mean)
In a dream by night
Made a statement (you are a dead man)
Tells him why (Sarah)
Abimelech had not approached her
Abimelech is scared and responds
Appealing to the Lord (Adonai) Justice (innocent)
He himself told me their relation (sister not wife)
She herself told me their relation (brother not husband)
I acted on the truth that I knew
Integrity of my heart
Innocence of my hands
God responds to Abimelech in a dream (continuation)
What the LORD knows (of course he knows, event the motive of the heart)
In the integrity of your heart (good or bad)
The LORD kept Abimelech from acting (I kept you)
This would have been a sin
This sin would have been against the God
I did not let you touch her
God tells Abimelech what to do
Return the man’s wife (Abraham’s)
Abraham is a prophet (First Mention of Prophet)
So that he will pray for you
If this happens you will not die
Don’t do it you will die
All who are yours will die
Read Genesis 20 8-10 - 39:45
The Morning
Early in the morning (must have hit him hard)
Called his servants told them about the dream and they were afraid (right response)
Tells them the truth
Call’s Abraham and questions him (all in the context of adultery)
What have you done to us? (not just the king but everyone)
How have I sinned against you?
What did you see? - What prompted you to do this thing?
Abimelech is blaming Abraham for
Bringing a great sin on his kingdom
Doing things to Abimelech that should not be done
Read Genesis 20 11-13 - 56:46
Abraham’s response
There is no fear of God ‘AT ALL’ in this place - so I had to ( Says who?)
Because of that they will kill me because of my wife
I really did not lie
She is my sister, like really, but she is kinda my wife also (Later condemned - Lev 18:9, 11; 20:17; Deut 27:22; Ezek 22:11)
Bringing God into this (catching strays?) - If he left me there?
God caused me to wander from my father’s house (really tho?)
Bringing Sarah into this (A plan from the jump)
This is a kindness you must do to me (a command?)
Every place we go you say “He is my brother”
Read Genesis 20 14-16 - 1:12:20
Pharaoh did the same thing (sort of)?
Pharaoh gave to Abram prior to knowing who Sarah really was (to win favor)
Abimelech took (like Sarah?) sheep and oxen, male and female servants
Gave them to Abraham
Returned Sarah
Opened his land to Abraham, dwell where you want
Pharoah did not do this (as far as we know)
1000 pieces of silver to “Sarah’s Brother” (Abraham)
Attests to Sarah’s
Innocence in the eyes for all who are with you
Vindicated before everyone
Read Genesis 20 17-18 - 1:24:15
Abraham Prays
Abraham prayed to God
God answered Abraham’s prayers
God healed his wife (so they were already sick)
Female servants so they bore children (hints at the LORD’s ability to open and close wombs)
Role reversal
Abraham is the upstanding one interceding for Abimelech
Abimelech is under judgment of the LORD
