The Brihadeeswara Temple in Thanjavur, India has many mysteries, including the apparent lack of a shadow, the transportation of a huge granite block, and the accuracy of its design.
The lack of a shadow
The temple's structure is designed to create an optical illusion that it doesn't cast a shadow.
The arrangement of stones prevents a distinct shadow from forming.
The temple's engineers created this illusion.
The floating stone
A huge granite block was transported from a village and placed on top of the temple using a 200-meter-long ramp.
It's a mystery how the block was lifted and placed inside.
The accuracy of the design
The temple's compound is almost a perfect rectangle of two equal squares.
The main shivlinga is exactly at the center of the second square.
The Nandi is almost at the center of the first square.
Other mysteries
Some say the temple was built without metal tools.
Some say the temple once had a moat around it, which has been filled up.
