In the first half of Mark’s gospel, we considered Christ’s power over every need. We saw Jesus’s power revealed in healing people, walking on water, calming storms, casting out demons, and feeding thousands. In the second half of Mark’s gospel, we see the greatest display of Christ’s power through the cross! This is the ultimate surprise and paradox of God’s power, where weakness (crucifixion) is ultimate strength: Jesus’ apparent defeat by worldly powers (sin, death, empire) becomes God’s greatest victory. As we will see, the cross changes everything, turning death into life, shame into glory, despair into hope, sorrow into joy.
