In the mid-1990s, Gary Webb, a seasoned investigative reporter, published a series of articles that shook the foundations of American society. His "Dark Alliance" series for the San Jose Mercury News alleged that the CIA was complicit in the trafficking of cocaine into the United States, fueling the devastating crack epidemic that ravaged inner-city communities. Webb faced a fierce backlash. Major media outlets and government officials vehemently denied his allegations, leading to professional isolation and personal despair. Webb's career was irreparably damaged, and in 2004, he was found dead under mysterious circumstances that were officially ruled a suicide.
