Early Life and Marriage
Blessed Angelina of Marsciano, born in 1377 in Montegiove, Italy, lived a life marked by deep devotion and service to others. Married at a young age to the nobleman Giovanni da Terni, Angelina’s early life was characterized by her commitment to her husband and her faith.
A Vow of Chastity
After Giovanni's death, Angelina took a vow of chastity and devoted herself entirely to God. She felt a calling to lead a life of poverty and service, following the Franciscan ideals of humility and simplicity. Angelina's deep spirituality and dedication to living out the Gospel values inspired those around her.
Founding of a Religious Community
In 1397, Angelina founded the first community of Regular Tertiaries, known as the Franciscan Sisters of Blessed Angelina. This community was unique in that it was composed of women who, like Angelina, had taken vows of chastity but were not bound by the strict cloistered life of traditional nuns. They dedicated themselves to works of charity, education, and prayer, serving the poor and marginalized in their communities.
Challenges and Perseverance
Despite facing opposition and challenges from those who misunderstood or opposed her mission, Angelina persevered with strong faith. Her leadership and example of a life devoted to God and service inspired many women to join her community. The Franciscan Sisters of Blessed Angelina grew and established several convents throughout Italy, continuing their mission of charity and education.
Legacy and Beatification
Blessed Angelina of Marsciano passed away on July 14, 1435. Her life of devotion, service, and faith left a lasting impact on the Church and the communities she served. She was beatified in 1825 by Pope Leo XII, and her feast day is celebrated on July 14th.
May the example of Blessed Angelina of Marsciano inspire us to live lives of service, humility, and unwavering faith, dedicating ourselves to the care and support of those in need.
