Martyrdom
As the violence escalated, Father Stanley received numerous death threats. Despite the pleas of friends and family to return to the United States, he chose to stay with his flock, famously stating, "The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger." On July 28, 1981, Father Stanley Rother was martyred in his rectory by assassins who opposed his work and his unwavering commitment to justice and peace.
Beatification and Legacy
Father Stanley Rother was beatified on September 23, 2017, by Pope Francis, becoming the first U.S.-born martyr to be beatified. His beatification ceremony, held in Oklahoma City, was attended by thousands, reflecting his enduring impact.
