Early Life and Calling
Blessed Stanley Rother was born on March 27, 1935, in Okarche, Oklahoma. Raised on his family's farm, Stanley developed a strong work ethic and a deep connection to his Catholic faith. After discerning a call to the priesthood, he entered the seminary. Despite initial academic struggles, Stanley persevered and was ordained a priest on May 25, 1963.
Missionary Work in Guatemala
Father Stanley Rother felt a strong calling to serve as a missionary. In 1968, he volunteered to serve at the Oklahoma mission in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala. There, he ministered to the Tz'utujil people, an indigenous community. Father Stanley immersed himself in the local culture, learning the Tz'utujil language and translating the New Testament into their native tongue. He worked tirelessly to improve the lives of his parishioners through education, healthcare, and agricultural projects.
Witness to Faith Amid Persecution
During the 1970s and early 1980s, Guatemala was engulfed in civil conflict. The Catholic Church, which stood up for the rights of the poor and oppressed, was often targeted. Father Stanley witnessed the increasing violence and threats against his parishioners. Despite the danger, he remained committed to his mission, providing spiritual and practical support to his community.
Martyrdom
As the violence escalated, Father Stanley received numerous death threats. Despite the pleas of friends and family to return to the United States, he chose to stay with his flock, famously stating, "The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger." On July 28, 1981, Father Stanley Rother was martyred in his rectory by assassins who opposed his work and his unwavering commitment to justice and peace.
Beatification and Legacy
Father Stanley Rother was beatified on September 23, 2017, by Pope Francis, becoming the first U.S.-born martyr to be beatified. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire countless people, especially those dedicated to missionary work, social justice, and standing with the oppressed. His beatification ceremony, held in Oklahoma City, was attended by thousands, reflecting his enduring impact.
