Description

The Biblical Account

The Feast of the Holy Innocents, also known as Childermas, is observed on December 28th. It commemorates the massacre of male infants in Bethlehem ordered by King Herod in his attempt to kill the infant Jesus. This tragic event is recorded in the Gospel of Matthew (2:16-18). Herod, feeling threatened by the prophecy of a new king, ordered the death of all male children two years old and under in and around Bethlehem.

The First Martyrs

The Holy Innocents are considered the first martyrs for Christ. Although they were too young to understand or profess faith, their deaths bear witness to the brutality of Herod and the lengths he would go to maintain his power. These innocent children hold a special place in the Church’s memory as they died in place of the Christ Child, highlighting the stark contrast between the innocence of children and the cruelty of Herod.

Reflection on Innocence and Martyrdom

The Feast of the Holy Innocents invites us to reflect on the themes of innocence, suffering, and the cost of discipleship. The massacre of these young children brings to light the reality of sin and evil in the world, and it reminds us of the sacrifices made in the fight against injustice. It is also a poignant reminder of the sanctity of life and the importance of protecting the most vulnerable among us.

Liturgical Significance

In the liturgical calendar, this feast is a somber reminder that the joy of Christmas is intertwined with the reality of suffering and martyrdom. The Holy Innocents, though they did not choose their fate, are honored for their role in the story of Christ’s early life. Their feast day serves as a call to the faithful to reflect on the cost of following Christ and the innocence that is often targeted by evil.

Patronage and Legacy

The Holy Innocents are the patron saints of babies, children, and victims of violence. Their feast day is an occasion for the Church to pray for the protection of children and to advocate for their safety and well-being. It also serves as a time to remember and support those who suffer from violence and injustice in the world today.

Reflection and Encouragement

The Feast of the Holy Innocents invites us to reflect on the value of life, the innocence of children, and the call to protect the vulnerable. It challenges us to confront the presence of evil and to commit ourselves to working for justice and peace. As we remember the Holy Innocents, let us be inspired to stand against violence and to cherish and protect the lives of all children.

May the memory of the Holy Innocents inspire us to uphold the sanctity of life, to protect the vulnerable, and to work for a world where innocence is cherished and safeguarded.
