The Apparitions and History
The story of Our Lady of Champion, formerly known as Our Lady of Good Help, is deeply rooted in the rich tradition of Marian apparitions. Located in Champion, Wisconsin, this site is the first and only approved Marian apparition in the United States, recognized by the Catholic Church.
The apparitions occurred in October 1859 when the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared three times to a young Belgian immigrant named Adele Brise. During these apparitions, Mary identified herself as the “Queen of Heaven” and instructed Adele to "gather the children in this wild country and teach them what they should know for salvation." This profound message emphasized the importance of catechesis and the role of Mary as a guiding mother. Adele devoted herself to this mission, traveling by foot to teach children about their faith, visiting homes, and spreading the message of Mary.
The Shrine and Pilgrimage Site
The Shrine of Our Lady of Champion has become a place of pilgrimage, drawing thousands of faithful each year who come to seek spiritual renewal, healing, and to honor the Blessed Mother. The shrine offers a peaceful and prayerful environment, where visitors can attend Mass, participate in the sacraments, and spend time in reflection and prayer.
One of the most significant events in the shrine's history is the miraculous preservation of the site during the Peshtigo Fire of 1871, which was one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history. While the surrounding areas were engulfed in flames, the grounds of the shrine, along with the people who sought refuge there, were spared. This event further solidified the site’s importance as a place of divine protection and Marian intercession. During the fire, Adele and others processed around the grounds holding a statue of Mary, praying the Rosary. The fire stopped at the shrine's boundaries, leaving it and those within untouched, which many consider a miraculous sign of Our Lady's protection.
The Message and Its Relevance
The message of Our Lady of Champion remains relevant today, emphasizing the importance of faith, education, and the guidance of Mary in our spiritual lives. Mary's instruction to Adele to teach the children highlights the enduring need for catechesis and the transmission of faith to future generations. Today, the shrine offers a variety of spiritual programs and events, including retreats, days of reflection, and opportunities for sacramental confession and adoration. Pilgrims come to seek Mary's intercession, to pray for their intentions, and to experience the peace and grace that the shrine provides.
