Early Life and Vocation
Saint Antônio de Sant’Anna Galvão, commonly known as Frei Galvão, was born on May 10, 1739, in Guaratinguetá, São Paulo, Brazil. He was born into a devout Catholic family of Portuguese descent. From a young age, Antônio felt a calling to the religious life. At the age of 21, he joined the Order of Friars Minor, commonly known as the Franciscans, and began his novitiate in Rio de Janeiro.
Priesthood and Ministry
Antônio was ordained a priest in 1762 and soon became known for his deep spirituality, humility, and dedication to his pastoral duties. He served in São Paulo, where his ministry included preaching, hearing confessions, and providing spiritual direction. Founding of the Conceptionist Sisters
In 1774, Frei Galvão co-founded the Recolhimento de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Recolhimento of Our Lady of the Conception) in São Paulo, a convent for women who wished to live a life of prayer and penance. This institution eventually became known as the Convent of Light (Mosteiro da Luz). Frei Galvão guided the sisters with fatherly care and provided spiritual direction, emphasizing a life of simplicity, humility, and deep devotion to God.
Miracles and Healing
Frei Galvão was renowned for his miracles through the power of the Holy Spirit and the gift of healing. Many people sought his intercession for various ailments and difficulties. He is particularly known for the "Galvão Pills," small paper pills containing a tiny prayer that he distributed to those in need of healing. Numerous miracles have been attributed to these pills, including cures of serious illnesses and complications in childbirth. His reputation as a miracle worker spread far and wide, and people from all over Brazil came to seek his help.
Death and Canonization
Saint Antônio de Sant’Anna Galvão died on December 23, 1822, in São Paulo. His life of holiness, dedication to the Church, and numerous miracles left a lasting impact on the faithful in Brazil. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 25, 1998, and canonized by Pope Benedict XVI on May 11, 2007, making him the first Brazilian-born saint.
