Early Life and Calling
Saint Damien de Veuster of Molokai, also known as Father Damien, was born in Belgium in 1840. From a young age, he felt a calling to serve as a missionary priest, inspired by the stories of the great saints who had dedicated their lives to the service of others. After joining the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Damien was ordained a priest and eagerly awaited his first missionary assignment.
Mission to Molokai
In 1864, Father Damien received his assignment to the Hawaiian Islands, where he would spend the rest of his life ministering to the lepers of Molokai. At that time, leprosy, now known as Hansen's disease, was a dreaded and highly stigmatized illness, and those afflicted with it were banished to the remote colony of Kalaupapa on the island of Molokai, where they were left to suffer and die in isolation.
Compassionate Care and Sacrificial Service
Father Damien arrived in Molokai with a deep sense of compassion and a burning desire to bring comfort and hope to the suffering lepers. Despite the challenging conditions and the risk to his own health, he immersed himself in the life of the colony, building homes and churches, providing medical care, and offering spiritual guidance and support to the residents.
Embracing the Cross
As Father Damien ministered to the lepers of Molokai, he encountered immense suffering and hardship, both physical and emotional. Yet, he faced these challenges with courage, seeing in the suffering of the lepers the presence of Christ Himself. He famously declared, "I make myself a leper to be with the lepers."

Saint Damien's selfless love and sacrificial service transformed the lives of the lepers of Molokai and inspired people around the world. His example of compassion, courage, and solidarity continues to challenge and inspire us today, reminding us of the power of love to overcome fear and division.
Feast Day and Devotion
The feast day of Saint Damien de Veuster of Molokai is celebrated on May 10th, the anniversary of his death in 1889. On this day, we honor his memory and give thanks for his extraordinary witness to the Gospel.
