Early Life and Call to Holiness
Saint Joan of the Cross, also known as Saint Jeanne Delanoue, was born on June 18, 1666, in Saumur, France. She grew up in a family that ran a small business selling religious articles. Despite her early life being marked by a focus on business and personal gain, Joan experienced a profound conversion that changed the course of her life.
Profound Conversion
Joan’s conversion began with an encounter with a poor elderly woman who inspired her to reflect on her life and her priorities. This experience led Joan to a deepened sense of faith and a commitment to serve the poor and the needy. Her transformation was marked by a profound sense of charity and a desire to live out the Gospel’s call to love and serve others.
Founding the Congregation
Moved by her newfound faith, Joan began to dedicate herself to works of charity. She opened her home to the homeless, the sick, and the destitute, providing them with care and shelter. Her acts of kindness attracted other like-minded women, and together they formed a community dedicated to serving the poor. This community eventually became known as the Congregation of Saint Anne of Providence, which received formal recognition from the Church.
A Life of Service
Joan and her companions lived a life of simplicity and service, relying on Divine Providence to sustain their charitable works. They established hospitals, orphanages, and schools, extending their care to all in need, regardless of their background or circumstances. Joan’s leadership and her deep faith were instrumental in guiding the community and expanding their mission of charity.

Saint Joan of the Cross passed away on August 17, 1736. Her life of service, humility, and profound charity left a lasting legacy. She was beatified by Pope Pius XII in 1947 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on October 31, 1982. Her dedication to the poor and her unwavering faith continue to inspire those who seek to live out the Gospel through acts of compassion and service.
