Early Life and Devotion
Saint Maria Goretti was born on October 16, 1890, in Corinaldo, Italy, into a poor farming family. Despite their difficult circumstances, Maria’s family was devoutly Catholic, and her upbringing was filled with faith and love. Maria, affectionately known as Marietta, was known for her piety, humility, and cheerful spirit. From a young age, she displayed a deep devotion to God and a strong commitment to purity.
Tragedy and Courage
On July 5, 1902, when Maria was just 11 years old, she faced a brutal assault by Alessandro Serenelli, a 20-year-old neighbor. Alessandro attempted to force Maria into committing a grave sin, but she resisted, repeatedly declaring that she would rather die than submit to his demands. In a fit of rage, Alessandro stabbed Maria multiple times. She was found by her family and taken to the hospital, where she endured excruciating pain but remained conscious and aware.
Forgiveness and Death
Even as she lay dying, Maria’s thoughts turned to forgiveness. She expressed her wish to forgive Alessandro, stating, “I forgive him for the love of Jesus, and I want him to be with me in Paradise.” Maria succumbed to her injuries on July 6, 1902, demonstrating incredible courage and faith until the very end. Her forgiveness of her attacker was a powerful testament to her deep faith and commitment to living out the teachings of Christ.
Canonization and Miracles
Maria Goretti’s story quickly spread, inspiring many with her example of purity, forgiveness, and faith. Alessandro was eventually arrested, tried, and sentenced to 30 years in prison. During his imprisonment, he experienced a profound conversion, attributing his change of heart to Maria’s intercession. After serving his sentence, he sought and received forgiveness from Maria’s mother, further illustrating the transformative power of forgiveness.
Maria was canonized by Pope Pius XII on June 24, 1950. Her canonization was attended by her mother, Assunta, marking the first time a parent witnessed their child’s canonization. Maria is celebrated as a martyr for purity, and her life continues to inspire countless people to live lives of chastity, forgiveness, and faith.
