Early Lives and Marriage

Saints Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin are celebrated for their exemplary Christian marriage and family life. Louis Martin was born on August 22, 1823, in Bordeaux, France, and Zélie Guérin was born on December 23, 1831, in Gandelain, France. Both came from devout Catholic families and initially pursued religious vocations—Louis as a watchmaker and Zélie as a lace maker. When their religious aspirations did not materialize, they dedicated themselves to their respective crafts.

Louis and Zélie met in Alençon, France, and experienced a profound connection. They married on July 13, 1858, and committed to living a holy and devout life together. Their marriage was marked by deep love, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to their faith.

Family Life and Faith

The Martins had nine children, though only five survived to adulthood. Their home was a nurturing environment filled with love, prayer, and a strong emphasis on living out the Catholic faith. Both Louis and Zélie were dedicated to their children’s spiritual and moral upbringing, emphasizing the importance of prayer, the sacraments, and acts of charity.

Their daughter, Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, also known as the "Little Flower," is perhaps the most well-known of their children. Thérèse’s writings about her parents highlight their deep faith, humility, and unwavering trust in God's providence.

Challenges and Perseverance

The Martins faced numerous challenges, including the loss of four children in infancy and early childhood, and Zélie's battle with breast cancer. Despite these hardships, they remained steadfast in their faith and trust in God. Zélie continued to run her successful lace-making business, while Louis supported her and managed the household.

Zélie passed away on August 28, 1877, at the age of 45, leaving Louis to care for their five surviving daughters. Louis devoted himself to their upbringing, ensuring they grew up in a loving and faith-filled environment. He supported his daughters’ vocations, four of whom entered religious life, including Thérèse, who would later become a Doctor of the Church.

Canonization and Feast Day

Louis and Zélie Martin were beatified on October 19, 2008, and canonized by Pope Francis on October 18, 2015. They are the first married couple to be canonized together, recognizing their joint sanctity and the holiness they lived out in their marriage and family life. Their feast day is celebrated on July 12th, the day before their wedding anniversary.
