Early Life and Journey to Freedom
Venerable Pierre Toussaint was born into slavery on June 27, 1766, in modern-day Haiti. As a young man, he was brought to New York City by his owners, the Bérard family, due to political unrest in Haiti. In New York, he was apprenticed to a hairdresser and quickly mastered the trade, becoming a sought-after stylist among the city's elite. His skills and reputation allowed him to earn a significant income, which he used not only for himself but also to support others, including his master's widow after her husband's death.
Generosity and Service
Despite gaining his freedom in 1807, Pierre continued to display remarkable generosity. He purchased the freedom of his future wife, Marie Rose Juliette, and together they adopted his orphaned niece, Euphémie. Pierre and his wife were known for their charitable works, opening their home to orphans, the sick, and those in need, regardless of race. They were particularly noted for their care during the yellow fever epidemics, offering their home and resources to those afflicted.
Spiritual Life and Legacy
Pierre was a devout Catholic, attending daily Mass at St. Peter’s Church on Barclay Street. His faith deeply influenced his actions, leading him to a life of charity and humility. He refused to retire despite his wealth, stating, “I have enough for myself, but if I stop working I have not enough for others.” His life of service and devotion made a profound impact on those around him.
Recognition and Veneration
Pierre Toussaint died on June 30, 1853, and was initially buried outside St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral. Due to his sanctity and the popular devotion that grew around him, his remains were moved to St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Fifth Avenue, a place that had once barred him entry because of his race. In 1996, he was declared Venerable by Pope John Paul II, a significant step towards canonization.
