Clinging to old habits, possessions, or self-definitions blocks transformation; true discipleship repeatedly calls for a renunciation of the self that seeks security in what the world offers.The gospel text from Luke is central: following Jesus means giving up one’s own way, taking up a cross daily, and accepting that apparent loss can be true gain. Real surrender is not an emptying into nothingness but a reordering—God replaces what is laid down with new loves, new purposes, and freedom to bear fruit.
