Description

Today on The Conveners, we're thrilled to meet a key figure in politics and sports. You might guess who it is, especially with the Olympics currently in the spotlight. We're in Sheffield, to talk to Richard Caborn. Thanks to Beth from the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine for hosting us to record this episode.

Richard was pivotal in bringing the 2012 Olympics to London. As the UK Minister of Sport under the Labour government from 2001 to 2007, his persistence was crucial. He'll share insights on the 2012 Olympics, the celebrities he persuaded to support the bid, and the lasting impact on Sheffield.

We'll also discuss the legacy of the Olympics, the value of such events, and their impact on participation. Additionally, Richard touches on leadership qualities essential for managing a massive project like the Olympics, with a £9.3 billion budget, despite widespread skepticism. His humility, despite his achievements, is remarkable.

It was a pleasure to spend time with Richard Caborn.
