November NICU Awareness Month is a time to highlight
the importance of Neonatal Intensive Care Units and their amazing staff around Australia. Offering specialised care and making a difference to the more than 48,000 babies born premature or sick each year.
This week on Wine with Wita, I interviewed Emma
Ferguson. Emma's path into motherhood didn’t go quite as expected—her little girl, Celeste, arrived nearly nine weeks early, weighing just 1.065 kg, after Emma faced complications with pre-eclampsia, IUGR, and low amniotic fluid. Those first six weeks were spent in the NICU, a time filled with challenges, hope, and strength.
During those early days, Emma began writing a poem,
imagining the world through Celeste’s tiny eyes. She captured what Celeste might have thought, felt, and seen, and how, even then, she somehow knew who her mum and dad were.
Fourteen months later, that poem evolved into *I Love You
Little Baby: A Baby’s NICU Story*, a children’s picture book that brings the NICU journey to life from a baby’s unique perspective.
This episode was quite special as I was a premi-baby, born at 34 weeks. My mothers recount is very similar to Emma's.
