In Episode 27 of The Steak Lad Experience, I had the genuine privilege of speaking with Richard Rozen.
Richard was born in Poland on the 15th April 1935 (meaning at the time of filming he is 91) and as a result of the war was forced into hiding alongside his mother and father. For 13 months, they hid in a cupboard without seeing the light of day. When their money ran out, they were asked to leave and whilst his family was being transported to an extermination camp were smuggled out by the partisans due his fathers previous occupation as a doctor. Whilst his father worked in the forest as a doctor for the partisans, Richard and his mother resided within a polish village where in order to remain safe he disguised himself as a little girl. Later Richard joined his father and the Partisans in the forest where he remained for 18 months until liberation.
During our discussion we touched on his early childhood memories before the war broke out, harrowing stories from his time in the forest with the partisans, the psychological impact as a result of what he experienced, his life after liberation/journey to Australia and much more.
As I acknowledged during our conversation, Richard is one of the last generations of people who survived the Holocaust. His story, whilst incredibly eye opening, is one that needs to be told so that in his words “people never forget what happened to us”.
A special thank you must go to Richard and his family for allowing me to document his story.
