On the morning of Monday Dec. 6th former Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit died suddenly during a routine workout. The cause of death is believed to be a massive cardiac event, but a necropsy will say for certain what led to the death of one of the most controversial figures the sport of horse racing has ever seen. Medina's fall from grace is still fresh in our minds; the investigation into his drug use, a scandal that cost him his 2021 Kentucky Derby title, was still underway at the time of Spirit's death. And now that he's gone will be his legacy? Will he be remembered for his triumphs or for his scandals? Time will tell but one thing is for certain now: he may not have had the heart of a champion after all, but Medina's spirit will always be with us.
