Have you ever felt a chill run down your spine whilst driving at night on unfamiliar roads?
The story of the hairy hands has become part of the paranormal lore of Dartmoor. A pair of disembodied hands that supposedly grab onto vehicles' steering wheel and drive them off the road.
The story has been repeated many times over theyears, with varying inaccuracies. My family has its own version of this story, which I share with new evidence from my research into the original historical sources.
In spring 2021, my father and I retraced the last part of the ill-fated route of Dr Helby from Cherrybrook Bridge to Postbridge. It was around the time of the 100th anniversary of the motorcycle accident that fatally wounded the Dr and injured his two young passengers. The sounds of the landscape and the Cherrybrook River flow hauntingly along with us, interspersed with my retelling of the incident and the newspaper reports of the time.
Enjoy!
