Description

It was great to have Steph McFarland (@mcstephiebee on Threads and Instagram) join me on The TyePod this week to talk about masculinity. She is an advocate and ally of healthy masculinity and researcher in the field.

Our conversation touches on the evolution of the term and the idea that masculinity can take on alternative definitions based on the individual. Authentic masculinity is not based on the view of men as providers with the expectation of physical strength and lack of emotion. Openness, sensitivity, and empathy are strengths that fall under this framework.

As a man with muscular dystrophy, I experienced challenges with my own masculinity and “traditional” societal roles for men as I reached adulthood. Severe disability often creates amplified feelings of inadequacy in terms of being a true partner in relationships. Perception of not having self worth or something to offer in relationships can be paralyzing.

I really appreciate Steph sharing her thoughts on disability and masculinity with me! You can watch this week’s episode on YouTube or listen on Spotify by visiting my bio!

As always, thank you so much for following and I hope that the podcast is helpful!
