UConn Women's Basketball Legend, Western Connecticut State University Head Coach Maria Conlon talks about the wildness of WNBA playoffs, a potential work stoppage, and how to fix everything. It was a tense atmosphere after Minnesota Lynx MVP candidate Napheesa Collier collided with Alyssa Thomas, star of the Phoenix Mercury. Maria talked about the contact potentially being incidental but said the Mercury can play "bully ball" when needed. Regardless, no foul was called, Collier was severely injured, and tempers flared. Minnesota head coach Cheryl Reeve ended up being ejected, with their coach suspended, along with Napheesa tearing ligaments in her ankle, Phoenix won the next game and is in the WNBA Finals.
Maria discussed officiating being a problem all season, not only the physicality, but inconsistency of officials. She talks about how players are the reason we have seen the league grow and thrive. This season had WNBA's highest ratings and set an attendance record. With no CBA agreement, an October 31st deadline looming, the players association and league are far apart on several issues.Maria pointed out how more people have become fans of women's college basketball, which is building stars and carrying over to the WNBA. A work stoppage at this point would be the worst time for both sides after such a monumental season that is growing interest in the game. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert has made some "interesting" comments and stay tuned.
