Today I'm talking with Brittany Hartley! We discuss the impact of adoption, and deconstructing Mormonism, me as an adoptee and Brittany as an adopted parent. We explore topics such as the trauma of adoption, the ethical considerations of adoption, the importance of cultural connection, and the challenges of racial identity. We also touch on the internalized racism and shame that can be perpetuated by religion, our experiences with motherhood and the existential crisis that can arise from losing all anchors in life. We explore the feelings of uncertainty and the void that can arise when leaving a religious community, as well as the impact of adoption on their sense of connection and bonding with their children. Overall, our conversation highlights the healing and growth that can come from embracing vulnerability and redefining one's own values and spirituality as women and mothers.
