Hi,

Yesterday we talked about editing your videos so

you can keep your viewers' attention throughout. This

included "tricks" like using pattern interrupts every

30 seconds to change things up and keep their interest.

Today, we’ll look at some tips on creating great thumbnails

that'll catch a viewer’s interest and entice them to start

watching.

In case you aren't familiar with the term, a thumbnail is a

small image that gives a teaser of what your actual video is

going to be about.

Here are some thumbnail tips to keep in mind:

If people are going to be in your thumbnails, keep in mind

the “Three E’s” – eyes, emotion, and excitement.

Make sure everyone’s eyes are pointed at the viewer, so

they feel connected to the video.

Make sure there is emotion portrayed in the thumbnail,

and make sure there is excitement being portrayed somewhere

in the thumbnail.

If you can get your viewers connected, they’re more likely

to watch your entire video.

Use backgrounds that stand out:

Try colorful backgrounds that make the foreground pop out

at the viewer.

Also, consider a background color or style that’s totally

different from the typical ones used by your competitors.

You want your thumbnail to really stand out when viewers are

quickly scrolling. If your thumbnail looks different from everyone

else’s, chances are, it'll grab their attention.

Oversaturate the colors in your thumbnail or sharpen the focus.

The point here is to make your thumbnails “pop” when they’re

reduced in size.

Remember to design small. You’ll be creating the thumbnail

on a full screen, but always keep in mind that viewers are

going to be seeing it micro-sized on their screens.

Make sure everything is going to show up super-clear and

super-colorful. Any text must be easily read on the small

screen.

Use your thumbnail to give just a teaser for your video,

not the whole idea or concept.

You want people to be intrigued and start watching, not

just scan the thumbnail and move right along.

If you’re creating a tutorial, show the payoff (results) in the

thumbnail. They’ll have to watch your video to see how to get to

that payoff, reward or conclusion, but show them what they’re

aiming for.

When you finish your thumbnail, take a good objective look

and ask yourself if you would click on that thumbnail if

you saw it on your screen.

Make sure it’s the best you can possibly produce and you’re

more likely to attract viewers.

Tomorrow, we’ll talk about some of the tools of the trade.

Don't miss it!
